Kitchen Orders (KDS)
Use this page when you work at the kitchen display and need to mark a dish as in progress or ready to serve.
Goal
You need to track dishes from "ordered" to "ready to serve" on the kitchen display (KDS), so the front-of-house team and the customer know when the food is ready.
Where this happens
- On the Kitchen Orders App (a separate till-side app for the kitchen display): the chef opens Kitchen Orders and sees every active ticket.
- On the Restaurant POS App till: the front-of-house team can also see a list of orders ready for collection under the Kitchen Orders entry in the till drawer (route
/kitchen-orders, screen title "Orders Ready For Collection"). This is a read-list filter, not the full chef workflow.
Kitchen Orders is a Restaurant-only screen. Retail stores do not see it.
Prerequisites
- You are signed in to the Kitchen Orders App on the kitchen display.
- The kitchen display is connected to the same store as the Restaurant POS till.
- Orders are coming through (the Restaurant POS till is open and ringing sales).
Steps
1. Open Kitchen Orders
On the kitchen display, open the Kitchen Orders app. The screen shows active tickets — one per table or order — with every dish, modifier, and the time the ticket has been waiting. Each order shows its status as QUEUED, COOKING, or READY.
2. Mark a dish as in progress
When the chef begins a dish:
- Tap the action button on the order card (labelled START COOKING when the order is queued).
- The button label changes to MARK COMPLETE and the order status moves to COOKING.
3. Mark a dish as ready
When the dish is plated:
- Tap the same action button (now labelled MARK COMPLETE).
- The order status moves to READY.
- The front-of-house team sees the dish as ready to serve when they open
/kitchen-orderson the Restaurant POS till.
4. Ticket changes (front-of-house)
If the front-of-house needs to change a ticket (wrong table, customer cancelled, items added), edit it on the Restaurant POS till — the till is the source of truth for what the customer paid for. The kitchen display updates from the till.
Expected result
- Every active dish is on the kitchen display.
- The front-of-house team sees when each dish is ready to collect.
- Tickets time-out visibly (colour change to status-delayed or status-late) so the kitchen knows which orders are waiting longest.
Edge cases
- A ticket is missing. Check the till is on the same store and the ticket was not already completed.
- A dish needs to be redone. Edit the ticket on the front-of-house till and re-render the kitchen card.
- The display is offline. Tickets buffer on the till and resync when the connection returns; ask your supervisor if tickets stay missing.
- A table number is wrong. Edit the ticket from the front-of-house till and the kitchen display updates.
